28 July 1951

The Pallottine mission in India began on 28 July 1951, when Fr. Lorenz Scheu, SAC, and Fr. Werner Hunold, SAC, arrived in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. Their assignment inaugurated a permanent Pallottine presence in Central India.

Over the decades, the Indian mission expanded rapidly in both rural and urban apostolic fields, leading to the establishment of parishes, educational institutions, formation houses, and social-development initiatives. India has since become the largest Pallottine entity worldwide, juridically composed of four Provinces and one Region.

The Society’s apostolic activity spans the full geographic spectrum—from densely populated urban centers such as New Delhi to remote frontier villages located near the Chinese border. The Indian Pallottines also support missions in numerous countries abroad.
