Duc in Altum! — St. John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Peter to “put out into the deep” — duc in altum! — and let down his nets for a catch! This miraculous haul in St. Luke’s account offers us a prime opportunity to read St. John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter, Novo Millennio Ineunte, in which he launched three of the most renowned Latin words of his papacy.

Duc in altum! These words ring out for us today, and they invite us to remember the past with gratitude, to live the present with enthusiasm and to look forward to the future with confidence: ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever’ (Heb 13:8).
